In 1887
Founding of the Vereniging Johannes Stichting by Dr J. Sasse.
The story begins earlier: the evangelist Smit took in children from the big cities at the Polderhuis, which stood at the crossroads in the village. Out of this came both the Marthastichting and the Johannes Stichting.
The aim was to run an institution for old and infirm people who could not keep themselves and were not cared for by their families – in its own words: "cast-out, uncared-for, dependent, old, weak or infirm persons, whether married or unmarried". Men and women lived separately at first.
In 1888
The foundation stone for the Johannes Stichting is laid on the street then still known in common speech as the Dorpsstraat, now the A.H. Kooistrastraat.
In 1928
The Johannes Stichting expands with a second house, Sterrenberg at Huis ter Heide.
In 1929
The Ursuline sisters of Bergen are sent out to The Hague and Leiden to found boarding institutions there: Huize Angela and the Lidwinahuis.
In 1935
The country house Sassenoord on the Dorpsstraat, once founded by the Revd Pieter Schoenmakers, has been bought by the St. Joseph Stichting of Bergen (North Holland) and becomes a Roman Catholic residential institution for children with intellectual disabilities — geestelijk gestoorde kinderen, in the words of the day. The house is renamed Huize Sint Ursula.
In 1952
Beside his house on the Oude Nieuwveenseweg, the vet Adr. Boogaerdt sets up a small animal hospital with an operating room, for livestock as well as pets.
