On 20 January 1878
A great fire strikes the village. On what is now the A.H. Kooistrastraat and in the Kerkstraat, two substantial farms, a café and some ten houses are lost, and with them a large part of the municipal archive.

In the second half of the 1700s
The water of the peat lakes swallows the neighbouring village of Schoot and the Uiterbuurt. Nieuwveen escapes by a hair.

Nieuwveen too has a cholera epidemic to endure. Eighty people die of it, a tenth of the population.
In 1914
Elim, the Johannes Stichting's annexe on the Kerkstraat where the women lived, burns down. There were no casualties.
After this fire men and women lived in a single building.
